DOUBLE STANDARDS WHEREVER WE LOOK

Double Standards is not an endearing trait for anyone especially where it concerns someone who aspires to become a leader and gain the trust of a nation.

Last week such a trait was blatant in one person, and within the space of a few days. The Leader of the Opposition (LOTO) Wavel Ramkalawan huffed and puffed in the National Assembly as he tried to prize the names of FA4JR beneficiaries and the amounts they received from the hands of the Minister for Finance, and would not take no for an answer.

Ramkalawan insisted that the request was to allow the Assembly Finance and Public Accounts Committee –FPAC –to have oversight over the accounts and see if the money had been well disbursed. But as one MNA remarked, no sooner would the list of recipients and the amounts be known that the politicking would start.

However, the dust had barely settled on this issue when in the debate on the Electoral Act amendments barely 36hours later the issue of donations to political parties came up.And guess what, the same LOTO was the first to call for non-disclosure of who were those who make the donations and how much they give…What is good for the goose is obviously not good for the gander, at least as far as the LOTO is concerned.
